Top Fuel Meeting 8th and 9th Jan - AERO Racing will be presenting the Outlaw RX-7 for Supercharged Outlaws - be there!

ANDRA Rocket Allstars Series Coverage
AERO Racing presented for the Top Fuel Meeting in front of a huge crowd at the Perth Motorplex for Supercharged Outlaws, with 19 fellow racers in the bracket.
Friday night was qualifying night for the fuelers, so Outlaws only had one pass. After a strong burnout the AERO RX-7 was shutdown on the startline with an oil leak. Back in the pits it was discovered the Peterson oil pump front seal had gone.
"Looks like a two dollar part stopped that run!" said PC after the run, "But thanks to the Chapman's pitting next door to us they had another seal and we had the engine running in no time ready for Saturday".
"I was a little nervous about the midday run - the outside air temp was around 90 degrees F, the track was a little slippery and I had made a few changes to gear ratios and had the engine freshened up. But with a 0.005 reaction time and a 7.592 @ 176.81mph dead straight pass it gave me the confidence we were on the right track."
"We turned the car around for the 7pm qualifier, and to continue the niggly little problems of the weekend the battery failed in the staging lanes. I have set the car up to run with no power, with a mechanical tacho - but I had no trans brake and so just left at idle to run a 7.829 @ 172.41mph."
"The first eliminator was up against Batson in his Holden Big Block ute at 9pm, but a 7.792 @ 172.41mph off a 7.570 dial in was no match for Batson's 6.847 off a 6.790 dial in."
"Well it was an eventful weekend, with plenty of excitement for the crew. We achieved quite a few goals in respect to the engine, and the tune. I have enough data now to make better decisions in future meetings. We won enough points to stay sixth in the Championship, and look forward to the second half of the season after Christmas".

20th Nov 2008
AERO Racing presented the RR/G RX-7 for racing at the Goldenstates last weekend, and had a very challenging meeting. Still coming to terms with driving a manual car - and a turbocharged engine, Paul Carey struggled with technique, and gearbox problems all weekend. The team will be back to conduct more runs at the next scheduled event.

Congratulations to Terry Stacy for a new PB of 7.764 @ 174.68mph. See the run

3rd Nov 2008
We fronted for the opening meeting at the Kwinana Motorplex on Saturday 1st November , but after a large burnout we suffered an engine problem that prevented restarting. The team will complete the repairs ready for the Golden States on 14/15th November. The package showed potential, and we look forward to getting some runs under our belt.

Congratulations to Terry Stacy for a new PB of 7.869 @ 170.13mph. See the run [HERE]

22nd Sept 2008
Rob McMahon at EL ES DE Engineering has completed the 3D Cad design, and the block of Alumec 89 billet ally has been dropped off at High Speed Engineering in Malaga, where Dennis Heller will massage his 5 axis machine over the billet.
13th Sept 2008
AERO Racing turned up to the Kwinana Beach Motorplex for the Test n Tune on Saturday, to complete initial runs in the RR/G combo. Bear in mind we had done zero dyno tuning - just engine runs up on stands, so my tune was safe and fat as always with a new unknown combo. After sorting out Tech Inspection issues with ANDRA, we presented for the first run, and I found the clutch was dragging, and without a line locker the burnout and staging was almost impossible. First run resulted in a missed third gear change due to linkage rigging problems.

Second run was better, resulting in a 10.425 @ 139.10mph, but I was more concerned with familiarisation with the clutch and four speed. Most people know that I have only ever driven auto versions of this RX-7, and the left hand was kept busy. I had two burnout stalls, as I have not finished my barrell valve settings and I just had too much fuel. Third run was a 10.267 @ 141.50mph with the same burnout and launch dramas.

Big thanks goes to Factory RE for building a strong 13B that withstood my over revs, and for supplying the Top Loader/clutch setup. Beefy for all the extra work getting the car to the track, and for Benny and the crew for the support.

I will turn up the wick on the opening meeting on Nov 1st and make it angry, now that I have a baseline tune.

Well we achieved startup on the RR/GA engine combo - see video on the right. Unfortunately the torque converter was too tight for the engine (ex blown3rotor 20B converter) and unsuitable for racing this combo. Instead of buggerising around with torque converters, we are fitting a 4 speed manual transmission and going RR/G. This will allow me to stage and launch a little harder.

Engine details:
- 13B Series 6 engine. Rebuilt by Factory RE
- Clearanced rotors by Terry Stacy
- 2mm aerospace apex seals.
- PP and dowelling by Terry Stacy.
- Mechanical Injection by AERO.
- Twin 70mm throttle bodies on AERO manifold.
- Twin T0-4 Turbochargers (ex Terry Stacey RR/G)
- Twin Supermag IV Magnetos

13th Sept 2008
The off season has been very busy for Aero Group in aviation with the boom in WA. Four corporate jets coming online have meant racing has taken second priority. The billet V8 block is progressing along the design process and the solid block of Alumec 89 ally will have it's first cut soon.

In the mean time, Paul Carey has put together a 13B twin turbo package for the Outlaw RX-7 for the team to go back racing until the V8 is back. "We really miss the racing as a team, and basically had most of the parts here anyway, so I had a look at the Group 2 indexes and the softest is RR/GA at 8.98. Mechanical injection is something that I love tuning, and we massaged a couple of Supermags to work on the 13B and Terry Stacy was kind enough to sell me his twin turbos he used for years. It should be a lot of fun anyway. A big thanks goes to Mike from Factory RE for sponsoring the 13B build. Factory RE will build all our rotary race engines, and assist the crew at the Motorplex.

The team will be testing at the Perth Motorplex on Saturday 11th October and Wednesday 29th October before the first event on 1st November. See you down at the track!

Delay for blown alky Toyota V8
Despite a great start to the season and promising runs by the AERO RX-7, the blown alky Toyota 4.7 liter V8 suffered some internal damage to the block. We are progressing with a billet block design and this may take some time. Want to help with the V8 - [ASSISTANCE REQUIRED]

2007 Season Opener

The rescheduled opening meeting of the Perth Motorplex was held on a gorgeous spring day in Perth, with crisp dry air that provided most teams with an excellent opportunity for quick and fast times. The AERO Outlaw RX-7 was ready to go from two weeks previous, so the team presented fresh and ready to go.

Safe and steady was the motto for the day with the team, as licensing still had to be secured from ANDRA. First pass of the day saw the Toyota powered RX-7 lay down a wheelstanding 8.49 pass that did not impress the ANDRA officials enough, so the team turned the car around for a second pass. Paul "PC" Carey - the team owner and driver continued trimming up the fuel system with assistance from Top Doorslammer legend John Zappia and nitro professor Ian Jenkens, when presented with a set of plugs from the tiny jap hemi quad cam engine.

Lining up on another solo run, PC stalled the car up a little lower and was rewarded with a 8.2 second run straight and true - enough to gain a Supercharged Outlaws license! First compulsory qualifier at six o'clock was up against front engine dragster pilot Steve McGuinness, and after more fuel trimming a 8.025 run @ 172.74 mph was another step forward on the journey with this combination.

First elimination run was up against the beautiful EH Ute of Alan Mahnkoph with the huge 500 plus cube Chev topped with a whipple screw blower. "I trimmed even more fuel out for the run and the air was pretty good" said PC, " so when I launched the car it went to the right a little - and I am a little shy of the wall after last years bingle, so I pedalled and shot out the back door for a lucky 8.199 win against Alan's red lighting 7.841"

"Unfortunately our handicap "package" was a little large to get a finals birth, but overall we were pretty happy with the days racing. The larger 4.7 litre Toyota engine is hanging in there structurally, and there is plenty left in the tune to get well and truly into the sevens."

Next meeting for the team is the Top Alcohol two day event on the 16th and 17th November - see you all there. Photos below thanks to High Octane Photos .

22nd Oct 2007
Opening Meeting postponed.

The opening meeting at the Kwinana Motorplex was postponed due to bad weather, and re-scheduled for 3rd November 2007. In the mean time the AERO Team will present the car for the first High Tech Titles in the Extreme Class on SUNDAY 28th October 2007. Details [ HERE ]

Due to other committments the crew was unable to front for the High Tech Titles. PC entered with the work ute, and went through four rounds in the EFI V8 class. Running 14.3's the VU SS Ute was reasonably consistent and easy to get down the track, compared to the higher powered 11 and 12 second racers. A self inflicted red light ended PC's run.

Outlaw RX-7 testing

After a year of solid work on the Outlaw RX-7, the AERO Team conducted some testing on the car at the Perth Motorplex last weekend, on a gorgeous sunny day at about 32 degrees C with good air. The team headed up by Crew Chief Frank Boother were keen to see the results of the chassis work completed in the AERO workshop, designed to keep the short wheelbase RX-7 running straight.

The car was in new satin black paint, kindly applied by sponsor Stuart at Supershot Express Transport. First pass of the day was a launch from idle, and driver Paul "PC" Carey was off the throttle at 60 feet as per the plan, as the car went to the right a little. Back in the pits a very small adjustment was made to the ladder bar set-up as per instructions from Doorslammer champ John Zappia who was on hand to assist.

Second pass on the day was planned as a half pass, but the launch and second gear power application showed movement to the right in the lane, so an early shutoff resulted. A second small adjustment was made on the ladder bar to give some more right rear weight, and the engine was given a good service. The 4.7 litre Toyota block was brand new, and had a new CNC girdle designed by guru Lorrenzo at Bonespeed Engineering and CNC machined by BDG Motorsport - and all seemed fine on inspection of the oil filter.

"The tune was very fat and lazy, as I had taken a lot of overdrive out of the blower" said PC, "but as I took more fuel out the engine was coming around slowly. On the third pass I finally had enough cylinders firing to complete a decent burnout, and as the car launched and drove straight, I completed a full pass - a PB 8.436et @ 258.63kph was the result. That pass was very rewarding for us as a team - a lot of work had gone into the car and it was a relief to have achieved our goals for the day".

The Outlaw RX-7 Japanese V8 is the second Toyota V8 in the large field of Supercharged Outlaws dominated by Chevs and Hemi V8's. Vic Donnas races the "Streetscene" Dragster running a blown alky 4.0 litre all ally combination and runs in the 6.8 second zone. The Outlaw RX-7 engine features a steel 4.7 litre block from the Toyota Land Cruiser, with 4.0 Lexus heads and crank. Custom CP pistons and GRP rods ensure the engine stays together under high boost. Thanks to Dave from Lextreme for information and supply of parts.

The team now prepares for the Perth Motorplex Opening Night on Saturday 20th October, where a final successful pass will see them licensed for competition in Supercharged Outlaws. See the new Supercharged Outlaws WA website. Photos courtesy of Melissa Carey, and Luke at WA Drag Racing

28th Feb 2007
Outlaw RX-7 debut

The Outlaw RX-7 fronted for the test-n-tune for the Westernationals on 28th Feb here at the Perth Motorplex, in order to test the new Blown Alky Japper V8 engine installed in place of the Blown Alky 20b rotary. On a wild and wooly day that rained most of the afternoon, the RX-7 was finally ready for a pass after a few niggly engine problems.

"I completed a short sharp burnout, and decided to just complete an idle launch and shut-off" said PC, "The car launched hard and went to the right turning the tyres all the way. I gave the car a pedal, revved it hard to 9,000rpm and hit second gear. The torque and power of the 282 cube quad cam engine just fried the tires, and we had a little incident with the wall."

"The horsepower coming out of this combo has surprised us, so we are returning to the workshop to complete some more modifications to the car including a Strange full floater diff and new 41 spline axles. We will revise gearing and overdrive to tame the car down until we get straight full passes - then we will turn the wick up again."

12th Jan 2007
Outlaw RX-7 to debut soon

After nearly two years of modifications, the AERO RX-7 is to debut at the Perth Motorplex in new Supercharged Outlaw trim. The compact japper doorslammer has a new look with new paint, extended rear wing, and new aerodynamic front spoiler.

The chassis received some additional work, with double rail chrome molly tubes and firewall, removable windscreen, and weight removal. Out came the ourageously loud blown 3 rotor engine, and in has gone a blown alcohol Toyota Tundra 4.7 Quad Cam V8. A modified bell housing and torque converter allowed the Powerglide to bolt up to the japper.

Delays in parts from the USA have delayed the season start, as a result of the custom designed rods and pistons.

"We hope to license the car and get into the mid sevens fairly quickly with this combo" said Paul Carey, "The PSI is a very efficient blower, and we will only have to spin it 25% over on this little engine. Mind you, 282 cubes is a lot bigger that the Lexus motor of 240 cubes run by the Donnas brothers Dragster, the Gullotto family Soarer, and the Periano family Hotrod."

28th June 2006:
Aero Group Racing goes to two-car format.

Paul Carey is making changes to his Aero Group Racing team after campaigning the Blown3rotor RX-7 in Super Sedan and Sport Compact over the last few seasons. The RX-7 is being upgraded to run the popular Superchaged Outlaw class.

"The blown rotary combo development was going along nicely - eventually getting an 8 second run both at WSID and Kwinana, but too many obstacles were placed in front of us to continue" said Carey. "I had a decision to make with my car - go turbo EFI rotary, or V8 blown alcohol, and the blown alcohol concept won out - but I did want to stick with an all Japanese compact combination."

"Underneath the RX-7 will be a Toyota Landcruiser quad cam V8 to run in Supercharged Outlaws, and Extreme class in Sport Compact events. It's a modified iron 'big block' around 295 cubes, and we will run the PSI blower, mechanical injection and magneto 'blown alky' combination, and plan to have that ready for the 2006/2007 season."

"The 20B rotary block and manifolds have been purchased by Ben Russell, who is building a Series 8 RX-7 turbo EFI combination. Ben is a welcome owner/driver to our team, and his new late model RX-7 will finally see the full potential of the Otter Engines peripheral ported 20B we developed. This car will be a full chassis lightweight car in full PRO/R Sport Compact trim, running a clutch and B&J transmission and all the good gear sourced through Zappia Racing Performance Imports."
