AERO RX-7 makes good season start

Aero Racing made a solid start to the season in Supercharged Outlaws in their Lexus powered RX-7 at the recent Pro Stock Pro Series event at the Perth Motorplex, finishing sixth overall and setting new personal best times.

The all Japanese sedan runs a tiny 4.7 litre quad cam Lexus engine, with a B Series PSI supercharger and two speed auto gearbox, weighing 2,400lb on a short 97 inch wheelbase.

"This was the first event for the new billet block we made here in Perth" said team owner and drive Paul "PC" Carey, "The car is going quicker each run as I get the tune a little closer to where I want it. We had new crew members on the team, and they had to perform alongside seasoned crew members in the Zappia Racing pit - Zap having kindly invited us to pit with him".

The first qualifier at 2 pm saw the RX-7 lay down a solid PB 7.7 second pass, but had the run disqualified due to the front clip fouling the start beams. A quick adjustment in the pits by the crew, and the compulsory qualifier at 7pm saw the car complete another PB 7.685 @ 176.12mph to take the win against Taylor's big block Monaro 7.849 @ 176.47mph.

"The RX-7 runs nice and straight down the track, although I had a moment in the burnout where it got a little sideways. Nice to hose a big block Chev in a heads up start though."

"Aircraft engine guru Ben from Platinum Aviation had a look at the engine compressions after that run, and we were down on a few. But we decided to present for the first eliminator up against Al McClure in the funny car, and dialled in a 7.62 to Al's 6.9 - he would have to chase me down".

"The car was down on power and struggled down the track, and after seeing Al McClure go flying by at a great rate of knots I thought my race was over. The McClure crew were all cheering in the back of the ute, so I was surprised when he shook my hand and said good win. He had gone 6.625 on a 6.9 dial in - that's some sort of breakout, and my 8.133 @ 163.04 was enough for the win"

"So the AERO RX-7 took 70 points for the win, and we head back to the Perth Motorplex in two weeks for the Pro Series Top Doorslammer and Top Bike rounds at the annual Goldenstates Championships.

Friday 13th November is qualifying night and very exciting to watch the Top Doorslammers try and get in the top eight. The AERO RX-7 will complete qualifying as well. Saturday's racing will start at 6pm and should be a great nights racing.
