John Zappia won his first Western Australian "Top Comp" Championship after the results of the last A Final were run at the Grand Final event at the Perth Motorplex last weekend. In a nail biting run for the Zappia Racing Team, Maurice Brennan in the AA/AP Commodore could have won the Championship, but was beaten by close friend and Top Comp Rookie Jeffrey Clark in the BB/D dragster handing the Championship to Zap by five points. Brad "Beefy" Morris presented for the Grand Final event at the Perth Motorplex in the BB/OM Group 2 Class, and had another excellent days racing. The RX-7 managed a 10.254 @ 134.52mph off the trailer, then a PB of 10.191 @ 134.32mph to settle in 12th out of the 13 cars in Super Comp. First round eliminations saw Beefy up against rival Colin Mortimor, and a 10.360 @ 134.52mph on an 8.45 index was not enough against a Colin's 9.295 off a 8.87 index. The 10.191 reset the quickest rotary IRS in Australia time - quite an achievement for the RX-7 that runs a standard Mazda gearbox and rear end.
ANDRA Rocket Allstars Coverage Zap goes 5.814 in Perth.

AERO Racing owner and driver Paul "PC" Carey has called an early end to the 2009/2010 Season after encountering problems with the standard Lexus heads. "Look we had an amazing first season with the AERO billet block. We overcame all the development snags with logical progression, and moved through a series of personal bests to settle at a quickest of 7.36 @ 186 mph. Not bad for a 282 cube engine. My mentor John Zappia first went 7.36 @ 186 mph in 1988 with a 482 KB Hemi, so I reckon we have done alright with the small quad cammer. Unfortunately the heads have not held up as I wanted, seeing as we are pushing the tuning envelope a little. So Dennis from High Speed Engineering agreed to build billet heads for the AERO block, so they are underway right now. For some Outlaw teams it's about detuning their huge big blocks to Super Sedan type performance, but not for us. We take the opportunity to push the envelope with NO RULES - true Outlaw thinking. No overdrive rules or weight breaks - go hard or go home!"

Brad "Beefy" Morris presented for the Westernations - his first National Open round of competition - in the Super Sedan Class, after insufficient numbers for the Sport Compact class he entered under.
Qualifying saw Beefman rattle off an off the trailer PB of 10.30 @ 131.57mph, a 10.98 @ 125.00mph (missed gear), and another PB 10.20 @ 131.19mph to settle him into 45th position in the 58 car field.
First round eliminations saw Beefy put away by verteran racer Christine May when another missed gear change saw him back on the trailer.
"I am just glad to be finally racing" said Beefy, "After nearly four years in the build I can now enjoy the fruits of my labour, and the many sponsors and supporters that have helped me get to the track. The car is faultless, and steadily getting quicker. My driving will only get better as well with more laps under my belt."
ANDRA High Tech Titles
Brad (Beefy) Morris debuted his RX-7 at the High Tech Titles with great success this weekend. After a long build time and a lot of heartache, Beefy progressed through his two licensing passes with no dramas and was duly signed off by the ANDRA Stewards, then reeled off PB after PB as he got used to his new ride. A 10.311 @ 134.93mph was the quickest run, and the car performed flawlessly - on a day that produced lots of mechanical failures in the field. The car will contest the upcoming Westernationals in Group 2 Super Stock bracket in the BB/OM class.
Beefy will debut the RX-7 at this meeting, to commence licencing runs and enter competition. The 13B Turbo combo will be tuned up at Factory RE this weekend, with a new Direct twin plate clutch installed.
The AERO Outlaw RX-7 may make the meeting - a strip down of the engine this week will determine the outcome. The blower banged pretty hard on the 7.38 run at the Top Alcohol meeting.

The AERO Racing Team presented at the two day Top Alcohol event at the Perth Motorplex this weekend, with the AERO RX-7 entered in Supercharged Outlaws, and the team really keen to test new components on the AERO Lexus engine.
"We have been dealing with some niggly little problems this season" said team owner and driver Paul Carey, "So solving all the problems was a priority so we can concentrate fully on getting the car to reach the lowest sustainable et and achieve consistency at that".
"Friday nights qualifier started with a nice strong burnout - the quad cam engine loves to rev, but tends to bog down very quickly if the revs drop. I have been experimenting with a two-step on the launch, and slowly getting my 60 foot times down lower - the two step allows a more even launch rpm regardless of the temperature, and I get 40 pounds boost prior to launching. Unfortunately an engine miss that has been in the engine all season was worse than ever, so I got off the power at 1,000 feet and failed to meet the 7.99 unofficial cut-off".
"Back in the pits is was obvious our oil problems were over with the new Peterson oil pump performing perfectly. Overnight we completed servicing and took off the complete MSD Magneto system and fitted my old faithfull back-up Mallory points magneto and we prepared for the 1.30 run. The track was a little slippery in the heat of the day, but a strong run free of missing showed potential with a 7.78 @ 181mph black tracking most of the way".
"The crew turned the car around pretty quick, and I put in a small change to the tune. In the compulsory qualifier at 7pm the RX-7 took off like a rocket - on the back wheels for ages. I hit my shift point and almost hit the rev limiter in top (that's 10,000 rpm) on a lovely straight pass that set a new personal best - 7.367 @ 185.95mph with a fantastic 1.096 60' time".
"That put the RX-7 10th in the field of 18 cars, and a first round match up with Gary Busch in the Pontiac Firebird Funny Car who top qualified with a 6.570. We had to do little to the car for the next round and dialed in a 7.330, and after a nice strong burnout faced Busch who had dialed in a 6.550. The car launched hard again but at 1,000' the burst panel blew with a boom that sheared all the blower studs as well. A 7.384 @ a slowing 166.66mph was no match for the Funny Car's 6.553 - 0.003 over their dial in".
"We made brilliant progress this meeting with the new AERO billet engine, and look forward to the Westernationals in a month".
