B Final Win at Drag Combat
2005 Drag Combat at the Kwinana Motorplex was on April 23rd, and a large number of cars turned out for the event, despite poor weather. The PAC MX-6 and Queen Street BMW were over on exhibition runs, and we were a chance in the Xtreme open class. During the break we purchased a new diff gear set (thanks to Reece at Chris Mills Performance for sourcing the rare ratio at short notice), had Pete Veersma set it up in the Strange centre, and serviced the car with very little changes.
First pass off the trailer was a personal best 9.078 @ 153.32mph with a very fat tune. The difference the diff gears made was amazing, with revs in second gear now in the power band that gave me a kick in the seat. 1.289 60 foot was in the ball park for an auto, and all other incrementals looked good. We turned the car around pretty fast, took some fuel out and headed back for another pass. Unfortunately rain came, and the track went off. Our next pass I had to get off, as the car was turning the tyres and going sideways.
All further attempts at a full throttle pass were not successful, as the track could just not hold the tyres. I tried all tricks to get the car down the track, even blowing the burst panel doing the unforgivable in a blown alcohol car - off and on the throttle too slowly. We had the blower off and on again quickly, and tried again with different setting with no luck.
Through attrition and just turning up for each round we won a solo in the B Final, and I tried a launch at idle and short shifted into second, but the tyres still went crazy in second - kind of scary at 160kph. All in all it was still an enjoyable event - the 7.50 pass by Bill in the quad rotor BMW was a highlight. Thanks to the Blown3rotor crew again, Stuart and Peter from Hotshot Transport for the use of their hot Commodore Ute for towing, John from The Cabin Group for the event, great support and encouragement from ANDRA Sport Compact Director Jason O'Halloran, and all the other XTreme racers that turned up.
Two more events on the horizon - Drag Combat in Sydney on the 29th May, and the Jamboree in Queensland on Sept 17th and 18th. Attending these would depend on funds and sponsorship opportunities.
