March Report 2005 Editor - Paul Carey
Been a while since the last report due to business demands and a lot of thrashing on the car, getting it ready for events. Since the last report, we have fronted for every National Open meeting at the Kwinana Motorplex, with mixed success. Here is a short summary on each event:
- Dec 27th 2004 - Nitro Funnycar Challenge. Absolutely crap weather - humid, hot and 4000ft of air. 1st lap out I tried heaps more blower to get more boost, short shifted into second and coasted through for a 10.599 @ 129.12mph. 2nd run blew the burst panel after hitting second gear. Struggled with the tune on the next runs against the weather with 10's and 11's. We got knocked out in the first round of Super Sedan, so lined up for a grudgy and blew the burst panel again in second.
- Jan 8th 2005 - USA Jets. First few runs were in the 10's again, then rung out a 9.877 @ 133.92. I red lit in the first round of Super Sedan posting a 9.981 on a 9.900 dial in. Back on the trailer early again!
- Jan 28-29th 2005 - Top Fuel two day event. Friday night passes were in the 10's and 11's and I was beginning to get jack of it. A little chat to Zap afterwards and we ended up looking up our PB 9.4 tune and sticking that back in and went 9.824 @ 138.67mph on Saturday. Rattled of a 9.967 @ 134.52mph, put more blower in then settled in for a first round win in Super Sedan after hosing the LJ Torana V8. Second round, I started the burnout and it was "on" (I can always tell how strong the engine is in the burnout - how freely in revs and what it will rev to) when all of a sudden the windscreen was covered in oil and the officials were shutting me down. The air bleed in the front of the blower had popped out, spewing all the blower oil out over the whole car.
- March 6th 2005 - Westernationals. The 5 weeks since last meeting were a mad thrash, as we had to reseal the 20B, and I completed a front cut in chrome moly. In all we picked up more comp, and lost 186 pounds in the car. The undercar mufflers were ditched because of the weight (and the realisation we were never going to be admitted to any event other than National Opens due to noise), and went back to zoomies out the side through hot dogs. It was actually quieter amazingly. We missed the first day still thrashing in the shed (finished at 3.30am Sunday), then presented for our first pass on Sunday afternoon. With a 5000rpm stall torque converter in the car from Dean at Fremantle Torque Converters, the car hooked up hard and turned the tyres all through first gear, then the blower gears failed at 3/4 track and we rolled through for a 9.734 @ 118.73mph. Event over for us with a munched 8/71 windbag.
Yesterdays event at the Kwinana Motorplex was one of our best.
Nitro Funnycar action on the 19th March 2005.
With a freshened blower on, I stuck a standard tune back in, but blew the burst panel in second gear. The car launched hard, with a 1.267 60' time and then black tracked through first gear, and coast through for a 9.558 @ 119.36 win. A new burst panel, and some more fuel and we won again with a 9.549 @ 136.77mph but the front clip chewed the blower belt out at 3/4 track. Mad thrashing happened back in the pits to rectify the front end, and renew the blower belt and blower o-ring. First round of Super Sedan was up next, and I got the win with a 9.683 @ 139.31 - not bad with only half throttle as the throttle guard had come loose and jammed in the carpet. Round 2 I dialed in a 9.500 and took the win after the guy red lit and backed off, and I coasted through for a 9.673 @ 116.27mph. Round 3 we dialed in a 9.440, and I had trouble on the line with frozen butterflies in the hat, and had to slam the throttle to get them to open each time. I had trouble staging, and came out late but managed to nearly chase my competitor down to the line. Little did I know I had broken out big time with a Personal Best of 9.324 @ 144.46mph. It was a hairy ride as I black tracked all over the lane in first and second. The blower belt tensioner came loose and chewed a second belt out on that run too at 3/4 track.
The crew worked really hard on the day, and we tackled every problem that was thrown against us. The car is just starting to make power, and now we have to get that power to the ground with some fine tuning of the suspension. Next meeting is 9th April, then Drag Combat on 23rd April at the Kwinana Motorplex.
