May/June Report 2004 Editor - Paul Carey
With the winter break upon us, I decided to catch up on some work overlooked during construction, as well as our planned mods for next season.
First up I painted the roll cage in two pack black paint. We had to modify the cage twice to satisfy rule changes during our build process I had overlooked, so it was time to finish the job. Topping off the interior I made a new dash, and had some various parts red alodined, and added some thin fireproof carpet. All set for upcomming photoshoots. I also purchased and fitted a new Stroud 5 point harness, with click in centre and quick release. Trying to get the old lever type setup on in the dark staging lanes in the Super Sedan rush was a nightmare.
The intake system came in for some modifications, including an o-ring seal for the blower. The gaskets were continually being blown out, especially on burst panel explosions! I added port nozzles, so we can trim the EGT's later on in our tuning. The Gonzo mufflers were removed, as half the guts were coming out of the pipes, and to our amazement the spiral interiors were almost crushed - leaving bugger all space for exhaust gas egress. Fully welding up the spirals fixed that drama - thanks to Willeton Exhausts.
The magneto's finally arrived from the US, and what huge mothers they are! 7amp rare earth magento's with external coils - giving nearly 400mj at the plugs - as much as Mallory Supermag IV's and MSD12's. The dual mag drive I bought off Zap's old HQ Monaro "Zap's Rat", and with some easy mods was fitted in the dizzy hole in the front cover. MSD leads completed the package off nicely, made by A1 Performance. Unfortunately the mags were so big we had to cut a hole in the bonnet for them to fit through - not entirely aerodynamic, but very tough.
Engine startups start this weekend to test the mags, and start the tune again. Photoshoots for magazines in the next few weeks, and to the track shortly - stay tuned.
