Engine Overhaul:
Progress on the overhaul and modification of the 20B three rotor is nearing completion. John Otter from Otter Engines has delivered the block to the shed, comprising of the following work:
  • Extra dowels fitted to rotor housings - for increased strength.
  • "Extend port" intake ports in side housings - allows more air in.
  • Block up and roll pin injector receptacles in side housing intake tracts.
  • Block off rear housing water fitting.
  • Repair rear housing top crack - cracked during blower backfire.
  • Install 2mm high performance aerospace 2 piece apex seals.
  • Clearance rotor sides.
  • Lap side housings.
  • Enlarge eccentric shaft oil holes - allowing more lubricating oil through.
  • Replace rotor bearings - roll pinned in place.
  • Remove exhaust port inserts - race port housings, and rework to fit pipes.
  • Up oil pressure to 110psi.
  • Oil pressure gallery mod - direct inlets to main bearings.
  • All new factory seals and gaskets.
Since the engine has been in the shed, the new structural sump is being manufactured. This aerospace "wing box" structure will prevent the renowned twist that occurs in high boost, high horsepower three rotor engines. The intake system has been completely re-manufactured from scratch, using a stronger design to allow blower backfire burst panel ruptures, without destroying the manifolds. Whilst the first design was light, the design was flawed - as we all saw in the video! The engine overhaul and modifications have taken time, but now allows us to bring forward the high horsepower gains sooner. Zap and Jimbob have some interesting plans for the tune on the blown alcohol setup.

Legend Boatbuilders:
Ric from Legends, has offered us great support in the manufacture of the RX-7, with supply of marine grade aluminium for engine plates. His welders have assisted recently in constructing the aerospace structural sump, and done a great job too! Thanks to Ric and the boys.

Car Graphics:
The biggest difference you will see when we front for racing again, is the new car graphics. Import and race graphic guru Jemahl from Current Trendz has pulled off another original design with this car - and it looks stunning. Finished in candy apple red and brushed aluminium, the design sets off the white just enough, and gives the car a completely new look.

Next meeting:
The planned next meeting of 27th December is looking doubtful, as delays in the engine manufacturing has left little time for dyno testing. The Motorplex has also informed me that the car will need mufflers to race, as the noise was apparently louder than any top fuel car. Special drag race Gonzo mufflers have been ordered, and new pipes have to be manufactured. We will leave the open pipes for tracks who don't mind some real blown alcohol noise!
